Summary: Under a dermatoscope, skin that looks clear in the mirror can show years of sun: pigment, uneven tone and early damage building quietly. In the UAE, where midday UV stays extreme for months, that build-up happens faster than most people think. Here are seven things the sun is doing to your skin, and the simple step that stops most of it.

Every hour of sun leaves a mark you can't see yet. UV damage is cumulative: the skin keeps a record of every exposure, and the visible signs, like spots, lines and uneven tone, often surface years later. The damage you see at 40 usually began on ordinary days in your twenties and thirties. The good news: protection adds up too, so every shaded hour from today counts.

The windscreen blocks most of the UVB that burns. But side windows usually let more UVA through, and UVA reaches deeper into the skin, where it is linked with pigment and ageing. Shade you carry covers the walk from the car to the door, the moment in the commute when your face takes the most direct sun.

Shade from above isn't the whole story. The World Health Organization notes that dry beach sand reflects around 15% of UV and sea foam around 25%, so on a beach or a pale promenade, light also reaches your face from below. A UPF 50+ umbrella with a black under-layer gives you shade from above and a dark underside that absorbs light instead of bouncing it back at you. Keep sunscreen on for the reflected light.

In the UAE it is not only UV. Heat and visible light can make melasma flare, which is why it often darkens in summer even in women who never miss sunscreen and still find it darker, patchier, and harder to fade by September. Cooler skin and less direct light both help, and standing in your own shade at midday is one of the simplest ways to get both.

Sun spots and uneven tone take years to surface. The skin in your mirror today mostly reflects the sun you had years ago, and the sun you get this summer shapes the skin you will see in ten years. Prevention is the part you fully control.

Sunscreen needs reapplying every two hours, and sooner if you sweat or wipe your face. In the UAE heat, the coat you put on at 8am has usually worn thin by the time the strongest sun arrives. Almost nobody reapplies at work or in the car . That gap is exactly where most daily sun gets through.

Serums work at night. Sunscreen works for a couple of hours. Shade works for as long as it is open. The Haven Umbrella is the step I suggest to anyone dealing with pigment in the UAE. Its UPF 50+ fabric blocks about 98% of UV and it has a black UV under-layer. It opens and closes with one press, clips to your bag by its carabiner loop and never needs reapplying. It doesn't treat or fade anything; it keeps the sun off your skin while your skincare does its job.

One for your bag, one for the car, and one for someone you love.
